Thando Thabethe and Other South African Stars Shine at the 2023 SAFTAs

The stars of South African television gathered for a night of recognition and celebration at the 2023 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. This event marked a significant moment as it was the first in-person award ceremony in three years, a testament to the resilience of the industry amid the ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Honoring the Best in the Business

With over 50 categories to be awarded, the SAFTAs offered an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the outstanding talent and creativity that the South African entertainment industry has to offer. The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Acting CEO, Thobela Mayinje, commended the dedication and hard work of the SAFTAs jury and extended her congratulations to all the deserving winners.

Mayinje stated, “You represent the best of the South African film and television industry. We are excited by all the films now showcasing in international festivals and markets,” highlighting the global impact of South African storytelling.

Lifetime Achievement Honors

Among the notable moments of the evening were the ‘lifetime achievement’ awards presented to 7deLaan actor Koos Roets and former journalist Derek Watts, acknowledging their substantial contributions to the industry over the years.

Standout Performers

Several individuals and productions garnered significant recognition during the SAFTAs17 ceremony. Cindy Swanepoel was honored as the best TV soap actress, while Melusi Mbele received the award for best TV soap actor. Thando Thabethe’s remarkable talent was acknowledged with the title of best actress in a TV comedy category. The series “How to Ruin Christmas” led the way in the TV category, securing five awards, while eTV emerged as the network with the most channel awards, amassing a total of 12.

A Government Presence

The event also drew attention from the political sphere, with the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, in attendance. Minister Kodwa expressed his admiration for the winners, acknowledging their dedication and the inspiration they bring to their craft.
